چکیده

Commentary Ramsden and colleagues provide an updated meta-analysis of the effects of dietary LA for secondary prevention of CHD and death, adding data from the SDHS, which was conducted from 1966 to 1973. A central question focuses on the CV effects of replacing saturated fat in the diet with n-6 (“omega-6”) PUFAs, primarily in the form of LA, compared with replacing saturated fat with a combination of n-6 and n-3 (“omega-3”) PUFAs. The authors conclude from their updated meta-analysis that n-6 PUFAs are associated with no indication of CHD benefit and an increased risk for CHD and all-cause mortality when they are substituted for saturated fat without n-3 PUFAs, although the effects were not statistically significant. A proposed mechanism that may contribute to these effects is increased susceptibility of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) that is enriched with n-6 LA to oxidation; increased LDL oxidation may contribute to CV disease.

Review: n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids reduce fatal MI, sudden death, and overall mortality in coronary heart disease.

S t u d y s e l e c t i o n Studies were selected if they were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared dietary or supplemental intake of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids with a control diet or placebo, reported fatal or nonfatal MI and overall mortality, and followed patients with MI or angiographically established CHD for ≥ 6 months. Studies with angiographic primary end points were e...

Changes of fatty acid profiles in fillets of Cobia (Rachycentron canadum) during frozen storage

In this study changes in fatty acids profile during frozen storage at -18°C of Cobia (Rachycentron canadum), caught from the Persian Gulf (Bandar Abbas) were studied. Changes in saturated fatty acids (SFAs), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), EPA+DHA/C16, n-3 PUFA/n-6 PUFA (n-3/n-6) and polyunsaturated fatty acids /saturated fatty acids (PUFA/SFA) were i...

The effect of replacing saturated fat with mostly n-6 polyunsaturated fat on coronary heart disease: a meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

BACKGROUND A cornerstone of conventional dietary advice is the recommendation to replace saturated fatty acids (SFA) with mostly n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Many clinical trials aimed to test this advice and have had their results pooled in several meta-analyses. However, earlier meta-analyses did not sufficiently account for major ...

Metabolic Effects of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Chickens: A Review

Chicken has been used as a suitable model for lipid metabolism studies, because dietary modifications especially dietary fat type can change chicken body composition. Fats act as a condense source of energy and certain fatty acids such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are required for both animal and human health. The n-3 PUFAs, especially, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic ...
